How to find a ring size without asking
Most people buying an engagement ring are trying to do it secretly, which makes the size the hardest part of the whole thing. Here is how to get it right, and what happens if you get it wrong.
The easy way: borrow a ring she already wears
The single most reliable method, and it needs no conversation. Take a ring she wears on the finger the engagement ring will go on — usually her left ring finger — and measure the inside diameter in millimetres. A ruler across the hole, edge to edge, is close enough if you are careful.
Two things to know: a ring worn on a different finger is a different size, so make sure it is the right finger. And thin rings measure slightly small, wide bands slightly large, so tell us which it was.

If it lands between two sizes, go up
A ring that is slightly loose can be worn. A ring that is slightly tight gets taken off, and then it lives in a drawer. When you are between sizes, choose the larger one and let us size it down afterwards if it needs it — sizing down is the easier and cleaner direction, and it is included either way.
Measure in warm weather if you can
Fingers swell in summer and shrink in winter, and the difference is easily half a size. A ring measured in a cold Southern Utah January can be tight by July. If you are measuring in winter, round up.
When to just ask, and how
If a proposal is not meant to be a surprise — or if you are choosing together, which more couples do every year — skip all of this and ask. It is the only method that is never wrong.
If it is a surprise and you have nothing to measure: a ring she wears on a different finger, a ring from a friend she has borrowed, or a photo of her hand beside something of a known size all get us close. Tell us what you have and we will work with it.
What happens if it is wrong
Nothing bad. Sizing is included in the price of the ring, and it is done here at the bench in St. George rather than posted away, so a correction is quick and quiet. This is the practical reason to buy from a jeweller rather than a warehouse: the fix is local.

Questions people actually ask
How do I find her ring size without asking?
Measure the inside diameter of a ring she already wears on that finger. Size 6 is about 16.5 mm across, size 7 is about 17.3 mm. If you have nothing to measure, ask us for a free sizer, or tell us what you do have and we will work from it.
What is the average ring size for a woman?
Most commonly 6 to 6.5, which is about 16.5 to 16.9 mm across the inside. Size 7 is also very common.
Is it better to go slightly bigger or slightly smaller?
Bigger. A loose ring gets worn and can be sized down later; a tight ring gets taken off and forgotten. Sizing is included either way.
Does the season affect ring size?
Yes, by as much as half a size. Fingers swell in summer and shrink in winter, so if you measure in cold weather, round up.
What if the ring does not fit when I give it to her?
